PSU Women’s Tennis earns ITA Academic honors

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team and six individual student-athletes were among those honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Wednesday as the organization announced its 2020 All-Academic Teams and Scholar-Athletes.

The Panthers, under the direction of 16-year head coach Barbara Rawlsky-Willett, claimed ITA All-Academic Team honors for the sixth straight year. To be eligible all varsity letter winners in the program must combine for a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better for the current academic year (Fall 2019 and Spring 2020).

Additionally, six individual team members were named ITA Scholar-Athletes as juniors Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.), Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) and Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.), sophomores Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) and Lexi Smith (Rindge, N.H.) and freshman Alyssa Bettencourt (West Brookfield, Mass.) all earned the honor. McCarthy and Sundquist are both two-time honorees. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete one must have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year.

Plymouth State was one of three Little East Conference (LEC) programs to achieve All-Academic Team status, joined by the University of Massachusetts Boston and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. A total of 175 NCAA Division III women's tennis programs across the country were recognized.

Last fall the Panthers posted a 10-6 mark, reaching double-digit wins for a program record third straight year, while going 6-3 in LEC play. PSU topped Western Connecticut State in the opening round of the LEC Tournament before being nipped, 5-4, in a thrilling semifinal match at UMass Boston.

Yesterday the LEC announced the 2020-21 women's tennis conference schedule will be played in the spring semester over concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The move also aligns the conference season and LEC Tournament with the NCAA Championships held annually in May.
