Bates notches her fourth shutout in LEC win
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Plymouth State University field hockey team picked up its eighth Little East Conference (LEC) win of the season Saturday after knocking off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 2-0, at Cressy Field.
Freshman Haley Wakefield (South Paris, Maine) broke a scoreless tie in the 21st minute. The rookie weaved through traffic on the right side of the circle and fired a shot to the far post to score her team-high 12th goal of the year, and her third game-winner.
The Panthers got a late insurance goal from senior Katie Martin (Waterbury Center, Vt.) in the 66th minute when she intercepted a UMD pass and streaked along the left side of the circle, finishing just inside the left post. It was Martin's seventh goal of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) needed to make just two saves to secure the shutout win, her fourth of the season. Bates leads the LEC in goals against average (0.66), save percentage (.893) and her four shutouts are also tops in the league. Corsairs' senior goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) made 11 saves in the setback.
The Panthers held a 24-7 advantage in shots, and a 13-2 edge in shots on goal.
With the win, PSU improves to 10-3 overall and 8-2 in the LEC. The Corsairs fall to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Plymouth State returns home for Senior Day on Tuesday (Oct. 17) against Thomas at the New Hampton School. The match is slated for 7:00 p.m.
